Seiko Prospex Solar Arnie Hybrid Divers 40th Anniversary Automatic Black Dial Black Steel Bracelet SNJ037P1
Seiko Prospex Solar ‘Arnie’ Hybrid Diver’s 40th Anniversary SNJ037P1
Background:
This Seiko Prospex Arnie Solar SNJ037P1 was used in the classic 80’s films, Commando & Predator. It was the bodybuilder come actor Arnold Schwarznegger who donned the watches in the films, hence the nickname ‘Arnie’. As of 2019, he is the most recent Republican governor of California.
The Case:
Despite measuring in at 47mm wide and having an unmistakable wrist presence, this Seiko Prospex Arnie Hybrid SNJ037P1 sits comfortably on the wrist. The unique shape of the watch is nicknamed the ‘Tuna’ due to its bold tuna tin-esque shape. This particular design is a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the world’s first hybrid diver’s watch with an alarm chronograph.
The case is crafted out of black plastic and black PVD stainless steel which has been treated to a brushed finish. It features a black unidirectional rotating bezel, which exhibits white 60-second countdown scale and pronounced easy-to-grip walls. A screw-down crown is positioned at 3 o’clock on the plastic mid-section of the case; it is positioned in between two push-buttons that are located at 2 and 4 o’clock. A third push-button is located at 8 o’clock on the side of the case, each push-button can be used to interact with the functions on the dial. The case is completed with hardlex crystal glass, which offers protection against scratches and shattering.
The Dial:
The watch’s ‘Hybrid’ name derives from the fact it was the world’s first to feature a combination of analogue and digital watch technology. The analogical time is displayed through luminescent hour markers that are interspersed by a 60-second track. The handset is composed of a short arrow-style minute hand and a short sword-style second hand - both of which have a silver frame and are filled with a luminescent coating. The digital time is displayed on a digital display window that is located at the 6 o’clock position on the dial. It is powered by an LCD display.
The Strap:
The SNJ037P1 is presented on a H-link black PVD stainless steel bracelet that features both brushed and polished finishes. It fastens through a three-fold clasp which features a push button release.
Functions:
This timepiece is equipped with Seiko’s famous Solar H855 movement which has a colossal six month power reserve when fully charged. It has an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month. The digital screen offers a handful of additional functions including a calendar, second time zone, chronograph and alarm which can be accessed through using the two buttons on the left hand side of the case. Additionally, the LCD display has a backlight to allow for easy visibility at night. This watch has a water resistance of 200 metres, making it suitable for diving.
