The Case:

This Seiko Prospex 1975 Tuna SLA041J1 shape is affectionately nicknamed by Seiko fans as a ‘Tuna’ – because of its larger diameter and bold shape like a tuna tin – loved for decades since its release. Plus its case back shows the new ISO standard stating it’s diver’s watch capability and metre depth for saturation diving. A remarkable waterproof one-piece structure enables this watch to withstand depths of 1,000 meters. In a 2020 watch industry first, the grade of stainless steel in this watch, Seiko’s “Ever-Brilliant Steel,” is more corrosion-resistant than in most luxury watches today and only usually used in the marine industry.
 
In terms of measurements, the case has a large diameter of 52.4mm and a thickness of 17.4mm making for easy visibility and a resilient timepiece. On top of the case is a black dive timer bezel which has a unidirectional feature to prevent the timer from being knocked out of place. Also, the markers on the bezel have a luminous coating for an easy to read display. As is seen in other Seiko diver’s watches, a silver gold crown sits at 4 o’clock which allows the watch to sit comfortably on the wrist. The dial is made from sapphire crystal glass which offers unparalleled scratch resistance. Additionally, an anti-reflective coating is present on the glass which prevents any glare from the sun to a diver’s torch. Further protection is offered through the black shroud that surrounds the case.

The Dial:

The dial is stylised in a blue coloration and it consists of an uncomplicated layout to allow for maximum readability. The watch appeals to the conventional, understated aesthetics of the tool watch through the adoption of bold circualr indices and an equally bold handset. Both of which have been filled with a luminescent material, which allows the dial to be read in the dark. Additionally a subtle date window replaces the 3 o'clock marker. The chapter ring displays the seconds in standard line markers, again a simple yet effective style.

The Strap:

The blue accordion-style silicone strap combines high durability and comfort – a strap design invented by Seiko in 1975 as a practical solution to the expansion and contraction of a diver’s wrist at different depths. A standard buckle can then be easily fastened to sit comfortably around your wrist.

The Functions:

 

This timepiece is powered by Seiko's 8L35 calibre movement that is based on the Grand Seiko caliber 9S55 movement. It offers a 50-hour power reserve and an accuracy +15 to -10 seconds per day. It is made up of 26 jewels and it beats at 28,800 BPH. This high grade calibre movement is hand assembled and adjusted by Seiko’s master watchmakers at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio in Morioka. It features a hacking function which allows the wearer to accurately set the time when the crown is pulled out. Finally, the watch has a water resistance of 1000 metres, suitable for saturation diving.
